HNI Publications

The ILSI Human Nutrition Institute publishes its work either in peer-reviewed scientific journals or in stand-alone publications.  Many of the publications are products of HNI's role as the Secretariat for the International Vitamin A Consultative Group and the International Nutritional Anemia Consultative Group.  These publications are available as downloadable files.  To reach these files, please click on either group's name.

HNI also publishes documents related to micronutrient malnutrition.  These may be found at Micronutrient Global Leadership Project, the name of the cooperative agreement between the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the ILSI Research Foundation.

ILSI Human Nutrition Institute : Biotechnology-Derived Nutritious Foods for Developing Countries: Needs, Opportunities, and Barriers

This publication contains the discussion summary and expanded abstracts from a workshop held in Cancun, Mexico on January 15-17, 2002. The workshop was organized by the ILSI Human Nutrition Institute and International Food Biotechnology Committee, the International Food Policy Research Institute, and the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the University of Maryland. Funding for the workshop was provided by the ILSI Human Nutrition Institute and International Food Biotechnology Committee and the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

The publication appeared in the December 2002 issue (vol. 23, no. 4) of the Food and Nutrition Bulletin. ILSI is grateful to the Bulletin for their willingness to allow electronic and print distribution of the discussion summary and expanded abstracts by ILSI.

Thirty-two individuals with expertise in modern biotechnology, nutrition, or both particpated in the discussions. There were representatives from 16 developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The first day of the workshop was devoted to nutrition issues facing developing countries, and to which strategies have worked in the past and why others did not. The second day focused on the potential for modern biotechnology to solve nutrition problems, specific problems that are under way, the barriers these efforts have encountered, and whether the nutrition community is involved in guiding these projects.

The summary was developed from small-group discussions, which then summarized and prioritized by the whole group. Each participant contributed to the overall understanding of the issue and helped generate a genuine enthusiasm for the prospects for developing working relationships between the nutrition communities and the agriculture plant-breeding communities in developing countries. All left the workshop excited about the prospects for improving the nutritional quality and quantity of foods available in developing countries.
