The ILSI Human Nutrition Institute (HNI) was established in 1989 as a component of the ILSI Research Foundation to address and resolve nutrition issues. HNI’s mission is to promote research and improve understanding and application of knowledge to address and resolve food and nutrition issues that impact human health and the prevention of disease. HNI is supported by government cooperative agreements and private industry donations.
At the present time, HNI is working in three general areas:
- Micronutrient malnutrition – Working with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Academy for Educational Development (AED), HNI serves as the secretariat for the Micronutrient Forum. Prior to the Micronutrient Forum, HNI managed the International Vitamin A Consultative Group (IVACG), the International Nutritional Anemia Group (INACG), and the Micronutrient Global Leadership project, under a cooperative agreement with USAID. The Micronutrient Forum is their successor. In addition to its work with USAID, HNI with other partners sponsors international workshops on the role of modern biotechnology in enhancing nutrient content of foods.
